Amid a growing magic mushrooms dispensary in Canada of mental health problems, many Canadians are seeking ways to improve their mental wellbeing by “micro-dosing” magic mushrooms. And, while psilocybin is still illegal in Canada, dozens of stores and websites are openly selling the hallucinogen.
In recent months, police raided several shops with names like Fun Guyz and Shroomyz in Vancouver and across the country. But the raids haven’t stopped the businesses from opening up again. And, as cannabis legalization continues to spread, psychedelic retailers see a new market.
“People are recognizing the benefits of the mushroom,” says James, who won’t give his last name because the business is illegal. He runs a store called Shroomyz, which has more than a dozen locations in Ontario and plans to expand across the country. Customers range from people looking for a natural way to treat depression or PTSD, to those wanting to experience the psychoactive effects of the drug.

While the government has largely shifted its approach to cannabis, there is no sign yet that it’s changing its view of psilocybin. As a result, the illicit marketplace for the drugs is flourishing.
But some politicians are pushing for change. Vancouver’s Green councillors Pete Fry and Adriane Carr introduced a motion this week that would direct city staff to create a system for regulating mushroom retail, similar to how it established the first framework to regulate cannabis sales in 2015. But the Vision-majority council voted down the motion.
