A qualified electrician can repair or install a variety of electrical systems. They can also inspect wiring to make sure it meets today’s standards. If your lights flicker or the fuses blow often it may be time to call an electrician.
How many hours do electricians work in Australia?
Electricians have a wide range of tools used for their work including pliers, wrenches, drills, hammers, wire strippers and crimpers. Some crimpers have ratchets and can apply pressure for long periods of time, others are hydraulically powered and can weld aluminum cable. Other tools include conduit benders for pipes and cables, insulation resistance testers that apply several hundred to thousand volts of electricity to test the integrity of wires, and a voltmeter which measures current flow.
In addition to tooling an electrician also needs specialized training for specific projects or types of equipment. For example, theater electricians are specifically trained in hanging, focusing and operating stage lighting instruments and equipment. Industrial electricians specialize in electrical construction and maintenance for large factories and plants, and power systems electricians are experienced with high voltage utility distribution lines. Most states require licensed electricians to pass an exam that demonstrates their proficiency in the trade. They must also complete a lengthy apprenticeship with an established master electrician. In some states, apprentices can become a “journeyperson” after seven to ten years of experience and passing an additional exam, or they can choose to pursue further education and receive an associate’s degree in an electrical field.
